In addition to seeing actual gameplay, reporter Jez Corden learned some juicy details about a few of Avowed's core gameplay systems.Īpparently, the game will feature "multiple class playstyles," and a Skyrim-like fluid class system. That's still the case to an extent, but the folks over at Windows Central reportedly snagged an early look at the game thanks to their sources (presumably some anonymous Obsidian devs).

We saw a single CG trailer in July of last year, and we were told that it would take place in the same world as Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity series - Eora - but that's about it. Until now, we really haven't heard much about Avowed. If newly-revealed gameplay rumors are anything to go by, the team might just have a chance at the crown.
#AVOWED RPG CRACK#
Obsidian challenged Bethesda's dominance with the release of The Outer Worlds in 2019, and it seems keen to do so again with the upcoming Avowed: its first crack at a medieval, first-person fantasy RPG. This could make a non-restrictive class system the best option, giving players a bit of initial direction and a sense of specialization without cutting them off from changing that direction later in the game.Highly anticipated: Bethesda has long been the dominant player in the first-person RPG genre thanks to titles like Skyrim, Morrowind, and Fallout 4 but no king rules forever. With Obsidian moving its CRPG Pillars of Eternity setting to a first-person RPG, it seems likely that the studio has mainstream accessibility in mind. Some lighter class systems like this can be found in games like Dark Souls, where classes affect how the player starts the game but doesn't stop them from redirecting their specialties as they play more. Class choice could give the player certain abilities at the start of the game which other classes would have to unlock later, for example, as well as affecting their attack power with certain weapons and spells.

It could be possible for Avowed to find a compromise between the class system found in more traditional RPGs and more accessible ones.

#AVOWED RPG MODS#
There are plenty of Skyrim mods which completely revamp the skill system without reintroducing classes, demonstrating the variety of routes Obsidian could go down even if classes go out the window. Skyrim's skill system also has flaws which aren't necessarily connected to doing away with traditional classes. Finally, the player's class would include seven skills, such as acrobatics, sneak, or speechcraft, which the player would be able to level at a faster rate than their other skills. These two attributes would each have a +5 bonus at the start of the game. Each class also came with two main attributes out of strength, intelligence, willpower, agility, speed, endurance, personality, and luck. Each of these classes came with a specialization or combination of specializations out of magic, stealth, and combat. In Oblivion, there were 21 pre-made classes the player could choose from near the start of the game, with the additional option to make their own custom class. This, in turn, would affect their success with skill checks and in combat throughout the game. In a typical TTRPG and its closer descendants, for example, a rogue would largely rely on dexterity and intelligence, and would start with an initial boost to those stats. This determines which stats they primarily rely on. In many traditional fantasy RPGs, players pick their class at the beginning of their adventures.
